The Midnight Carousel (A Forest Falls Frolic) by Hanna Park

Belle Stanhope had plans. Good plans. Practical plans.

None of them involved Hudson Carver.

The florist with the crooked smile had become a distraction she neither wanted nor could avoid. Which was inconvenient, considering the Pretty River Inn and the upcoming bachelor auction left little room for distractions.

For years, Hudson had been content with the life he'd built beneath Christmas Mountain. His flower shop, his workshop, and the friends who had become family were more than he'd ever expected. Then he met Belle Stanhope.

As Christmas approaches, the carousel's calliope sings off-key, and the old magic he'd left behind stirs once more. The life he'd built and the life he wants are no longer the same.

In Forest Falls, wishes have a way of finding the people who need them most.

Review

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Five-Star Review of The Midnight Carousel by Hanna Park

The Midnight Carousel by Hanna Park is a charming Christmas romance that brings together a small-town setting, a touch of fantasy and a love story that is allowed to develop at its own pace. Set in Forest Falls during the festive season, the novel centres on inn manager Belle Stanhope and local florist Hudson Carver.

One of the strongest aspects of the novel is the relationship between Belle and Hudson. There is already a familiarity between them when the story begins, and Park builds on this through conversations, shared moments and an attraction that neither of them is particularly good at hiding. It makes a refreshing change from romances that rely on an immediate declaration of love.

The fantasy element gives the novel an unexpected dimension. Forest Falls may be filled with all the familiar trappings of Christmas, but there are older and stranger things beneath the surface. The carousel plays an important part in this, as does Hudson himself, whose past is considerably more unusual than Belle could ever have imagined.

The secondary characters are also well used. They are part of Belle and Hudson's everyday lives rather than simply appearing when the plot requires them, which helps Forest Falls feel like an established community. There is also a good deal of humour, particularly when those around Belle and Hudson become increasingly aware of what is happening between them.

The novel is lighthearted in places, but the story also considers what it means to belong somewhere and whether home is necessarily the place you came from. This gives Hudson's story particular weight as the novel progresses.

Final thoughts: The Midnight Carousel is an imaginative take on the Christmas romance, with a sweet love story, an unusual fantasy element and a setting made for the festive season. It is an entertaining and original read that offers something a little different from the traditional small-town Christmas story.

Hanna Park

I began my writing career in the pre-dawn of a winter morning while my husband snored like a train. We could call my husband the catalyst. If it weren’t for him, I would never have gone to the kitchen to make a pot of coffee, feed the cat, and sit on the loveseat in front of the fire. It was there, in those moments of wondrous quiet, that I did something I had never thought possible. I opened my laptop, and while the coffee went cold, I wrote a story. My husband had no idea that these sojourns to the loveseat in front of the fire would become a daily occurrence, that writing would become an obsession, but the cat knew. She knows everything.

I write stories that make you laugh, make you cry, and make you love. Thank you, friends, for reading!

In the beginning, there was an empty page.

I am a writer who lives in Muskoka, Canada, with a husband who snores, a hungry cat, and an almost perfect canine––he’s an adorable little shit.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐FIVE STARS for

Fraying Skeins by Nancy Jardine

One of the things that really struck me while reading Fraying Skeins was how much Margaret has had to teach herself about the world. She is intelligent and curious, but being a woman without the right background or qualifications means there are always doors that aren't quite open to her. Even something as simple as borrowing a library book isn't necessarily straightforward.

I also found the Scottish Christmas traditions fascinating. I hadn't realised quite how little Christmas was still observed in Scotland during this period. There is a lovely scene where Margaret talks about Prince Albert and the Christmas traditions he brought with him, and the children are fascinated by the idea of a decorated tree. Then almost immediately everyone is talking about Hogmanay and Ne'erday, which are clearly far more familiar and important celebrations to them.

These were actually some of my favourite parts of the book. I love historical fiction that makes me stop and think, ‘I didn't know that,’ without feeling as though I've suddenly wandered into a history lesson.

There is romance in the story, but Margaret herself was the reason I kept reading. She is curious about everything and determined to make something of the opportunities that come her way. I finished the book feeling as though I really should go back and discover how her story began.

A very enjoyable historical read, and one that had me looking up Scottish Christmas traditions afterwards. Five stars.

A determined mother. A loyal son. An unforgettable journey.

When Euphemia and her family leave the rugged Isle of Man in search of a better life, they carry little more than hope, determination, and an unbreakable bond with one another. Their journey takes them across continents—from the windswept shores of Britain to the forests of Ontario and the vast prairie landscapes of Saskatchewan—where every new beginning demands sacrifice.

Through hardship, heartbreak, unexpected love, and the relentless challenges of frontier life, generations of one family discover that courage is often quiet, and home is something built one day at a time.

Richly researched and inspired by true family history, Time Enough is an unforgettable historical novel celebrating resilience, tradition, and the enduring strength of ordinary people who accomplished extraordinary things.

Perfect for listeners who enjoy emotionally rich historical fiction, multigenerational family sagas, and stories that linger long after the final chapter.

Spanning continents and generations, Time Enough follows a courageous woman and her eldest son as they leave the Isle of Man behind, chasing a future across the Atlantic. From bustling Michigan to the rugged beauty of Manitoulin Island and the vast plains of Saskatchewan, they battle loss, betrayal, and the hard truths of survival in an unforgiving new world. As their past clings tight and the future demands sacrifice, one question endures: What does it take to finally feel at home?

Lise Mayne delivers a sweeping, emotionally charged novel for fans of The Nightingale, The Book of Negroes, and The Giver of Stars — a story of grit, heart, and the enduring power of family.
